چکیده

Magnetic artificial cilia (MAC) are small actuators inspired by biological found in nature. In microfluidic chips, MAC can generate flow and remove microparticles, with applications anti-fouling. However, the used for anti-fouling current literature has dimensions of several hundred micrometers length, which limits application to relatively large length scales. Here, biologically-sized magnetic (b-MAC) only 45 long that randomly distributed on surface, microparticles. It is shown microparticles sizes ranging from 5 40 µm be removed efficiently final cleanness ranges 69% 100%, highest actuation frequency applied (40 Hz). The lowest obtained a size equal average pitch between b-MAC. randomness distribution appears have positive effect cleanliness, compared authors’ earlier work using regular array. demonstrated self-cleaning b-MAC constitutes an essential step toward efficient surfaces real-life miniaturized devices, such as lab-on-a-chip or organ-on-a-chip well preventing fouling submerged marine sensors.

Self-assembled artificial cilia.

Due to their small dimensions, microfluidic devices operate in the low Reynolds number regime. In this case, the hydrodynamics is governed by the viscosity rather than inertia and special elements have to be introduced into the system for mixing and pumping of fluids. Here we report on the realization of an effective pumping device that mimics a ciliated surface and imitates its motion to gener...

Breaking of symmetry in microfluidic propulsion driven by artificial cilia.

In this Brief Report we investigate biomimetic fluid propulsion due to an array of periodically beating artificial cilia. A generic model system is defined in which the effects of inertial fluid forces and the spatial, temporal, and orientational asymmetries of the ciliary motion can be individually controlled. We demonstrate that the so-far unexplored orientational asymmetry plays an important...

Artificial swarms: Biologically inspired organization

Many species of animals self-organize into coherent groups called swarms, flocks, schools, etc. These coherent groups enhance to the fitness of the individuals within it in a variety of ways including moving toward desirable goals or avoiding threats. Remarkably, the group forms without any sort of central control. Local interactions with a simple set of rules can lead to remarkably complex beh...

Biologically Plausible Artificial Neural Networks

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are based on an abstract and simplified view of the neuron. Artificial neurons are connected and arranged in layers to form large networks, where learning and connections determine the network function. Connections can be formed through learning and do not need to be ’programmed.’ Recent ANN models lack many physiological properties of the neuron, because they ...

Swimming like algae: biomimetic soft artificial cilia.

Cilia are used effectively in a wide variety of biological systems from fluid transport to thrust generation. Here, we present the design and implementation of artificial cilia, based on a biomimetic planar actuator using soft-smart materials. This actuator is modelled on the cilia movement of the alga Volvox, and represents the cilium as a piecewise constant-curvature robotic actuator that ena...
